Meet ABA therapist Kayla

Innovative Behavior Options Staff Spotlight: Meet Kayla

Oct 14, 2022

At Innovative Behavior Options, we offer Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy at our Roswell therapy center and in-home therapy throughout metro Atlanta. We create individualized behavior plans to increase adaptive skills and decrease potentially maladaptive behaviors to help children with autism and their families thrive.

At IBO, we’re honored to work with our outstanding staff, including some of the best Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) in the business. To give clients and future clients an opportunity to get to know our incredible staff, from time to time we like to use our blog to spotlight some of our incredible ABA therapists. Today, we’d like to introduce you to Kayla, one of our talented RBTs (and soon to be BCBA!).

Applied Behavior Analysis Therapy in Metro Atlanta

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I was born and raised here in Georgia.  My husband and I have two kids, a boy and a girl.  We like to tube and kayak in the local rivers and watch our son play baseball and our daughter ride horses.  I have a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Master’s in Education.  I am currently working on achieving my BCBA certification so I can continue putting my 14 years of experience to use.

How long have you been part of the IBO team?

I have been with the IBO team for 10 years.  Prior to IBO I worked for other ABA agencies.  As an RBT, my job is to work with clients to make sure the goals written by the BCBA are implemented correctly.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Normally, I will get ready in the mornings, get my kids on the bus and drive to my first client (I typically provide in-home therapy and school inclusion in Cumming, Roswell, and Marietta).  My sessions are usually 3 to 5 hours.  While in the client’s home, I implement the current goals while taking data and work on decreasing behaviors and encouraging socially accepted behaviors. At the end of my session, I clean up my area and complete data and soap notes. I generally meet with two clients each day.

What interested you initially about this type of work?

I originally wanted to be an occupational therapist. While I was volunteering with an OT for a project in my psychology class, the therapist opened an ABA section at his clinic.  I was hooked.  I like that each day is a little different.  I get to be creative and think outside of the box. Some days I get to go outdoors with my clients (if the outdoor environment goes with the plan), and I don’t feel stuck behind a desk all day.

What is the best part of your week?

I love that I equally love being at home with my family but also love being at work as well.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned recently?

Some creative ways to help children become less prompt dependent.

What puts a smile on your face?

My family and my clients’ smiles.

Kayla’s passion for using ABA therapy to help individuals with autism and her commitment to her clients are just two of her many qualities that make her such an asset to our team and clients.
